WINE is a translation layer that allows you to run Windows executables on Linux.

Proton

Proton is a project by Valve designed specifically for running Windows games on Linux.
It comes shipped with Steam and has multiple versions and variants by both Valve and the Community.

Bottles

A modern and simple frontend for WINE to allow you to easily create custom "Wine Bottles" for each Windows application you plan to run so you are not relying on trying to get your system WINE to run everything with no conflicts.
This principal is known as "Sandboxing".
